If your PS2 is a fat you'll have to get a network adapter. You can buy Free McBoot cards cheaply off ebay. But as long as your PS2 isn't a 90000 series Slim you can get a Free McBoot memory card to play games over the network using OPL. I tried playing games off a USB drive but the experience was horrible, lots of lagging and crashes. The PS2 only has USB 1.1, which was designed for things like mice and keyboards, not high bandwidth devices like storage drives. Any tech related posts not in there will be removed.
